What is Duvel Green or Duvel Draft? Have you had Duvel in the bottle? Duvel is one of Belgium’s most popular ales, made with the finest quality ingredients (two-row summer malts, Saaz and Styrian Goldings hops) and, after the first brewing and first fermentation, which takes about a month, the beer then has additional yeast and sugar added and is bottled to undergo a second fermentation for another 60 days in a warm cellar.
When visiting the brewery, as I did in 2007, you can sample the Duvel before it goes to the secondary fermentation. They cold-filter a bit of the “green” beer, and it is for sale only at the brewery and a few locations in Belgium.
This green (not in color, but as in not matured or in the young stage) beer is, of course, lighter in body, lighter in carbonation, lighter in alcohol content, and has a fresh crisp taste with a gentler hoppiness. It doesn’t have the complexity of the more mature double-fermented Duvel; same characteristics, but different.
Now, for the first time, this beer will be available in Ohio. On Thursday, June 25 it will be on draft at McNulty’s Bier-Markt in Cleveland. Friday it will be available at Buckeye Beer Engine, and other select locations such as the Winking Lizards in Bedford Heights, Fairlawn and Independence, and the Tremont Tap House, La Cave du Vin, Ballantine, and Melt.
