Halloween candy -- friend or foe?

The following tip comes from Los Angeles mother, Deborah Merlin, author of Victory over AD/HD; A holistic approach for helping children with Attention Hyperactivity Disorder.  Read an excerpt from her book.

Children love to go treat or treating with their friends. It’s a great social experience and a popular tradition, especially in cities such as Los Angeles!

However, most of the commercial candy available these days contains ingredients such as artificial food coloring, wheat, sugar, dairy and sometimes aspartame. These ingredients may trigger negative reactions in some children.

I knew there was no way I could discourage my twins from trick-or-treating when they were seven years old, even though they needed to avoid several of these ingredients.

If your child should avoid any of the traditional ingredients in candy, you may want to try this suggestion to support your child’s health and give them a fun experience with their friends!

My solution — I used the oldest trick in the world: bribery. At the end of the evening, I bought the candy from them!  My sons had a great time with their friends, and they were happy enough about our arrangement.  With their money, they bought a new toy!

Please let us know what you think about this idea. If you have other suggestions for helping to keep your child healthy at Halloween, please let us know below!
