Food politics are in the movie theatre spotlight with the release of two new documentaries Food, Inc. and Fresh. Food, Inc., by Robert Kenner, concentrates on showing the inner workings of the industrial food complex and its far reaching consequences. It paints a broad picture and touches on issues such as foodborne illness, genetic modification, diabetes, factory farming, environmental impacts and workers rights. It also highlights the revolving door between government regulatory agencies, such as the FDA, and food industry giants like Monsanto. Food, Inc. features interviews with Eric Schlosser author of Fast Food Nation, Michael Pollan author of The Omnivores Dilemma and Joe Salatin owner of Polyface Farm. Though not the most uplifting film, Food, Inc. is important and eye opening. Considering most people have no idea where their food comes from, this film should be basic education before entering the supermarket (you may just decide not to enter at all).

In contrast, the documentary Fresh, by Ana Sofia Joanes, focuses on the inspirational individuals who are reinventing the American food system. Fresh illustrates more of the possible solutions than the food industry problems, offering a hopeful vision of the future that is missing in Food, Inc. Fresh also features Michael Pollan and Joe Salatin, as well as urban farmer and activist Will Allen.
Food, Inc. is playing at the Egyptian Theatre through Thursday July 2nd and may be extended. Fresh has yet to come to Seattle but if you are interested in hosting a screening there are full details of how to do so on the website.
