Kitchen by Lonnie Lavigne Courtsey of Eat Local

I recently stumbled upon Eat Local, an amazing store that makes eating local and organic as convenient as is humanly possible. Sometimes life gets so busy that even though you want to eat healthy next thing you know you’re heating up a TV dinner. Want another option? Eat Local has been on Queen Anne hill for 3 years and specializes in take-home, from scratch, pre-prepared meals using local and organic ingredients.

Outside the store I was greeted by an adorable vegetable and herb garden planted by Seattle Farm. Inside I was welcomed by the amazingly helpful staff as well as the congenial owner Greg Conner. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when I saw all the amazing local and organic food items they offered! To name just a few:

Thundering Hooves 100% grass-fed pastured meats

• Foraged & Found Edibles (mushrooms et al)

Golden Glen Creamery Dairy

Holmquist Hazelnuts

Loki Fish

Bluebird Grain Farms

Woodring jams

But let’s not stop there…they use these local organic ingredients to make their take home appetizers, soups, pizzas, pastas, entrees, sides and desserts. Eat Local offers a wide variety including meat, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and children’s options. The meals are then frozen instead of using obscure chemicals, additives or preservatives to maintain freshness. They even have reusable glass containers that can be bought and returned through deposit. Otherwise they use BPA free, biodegradable packaging.

Would you like a glass of wine to go with your meal? Eat Local has their own in store wine label made from (of course) Washington wine producers. After all, moderate amounts of red wine (1-2 glasses a day) can be heart healthy . They also feature local artists and offer home delivery via spud!

In store I tried the raspberry crisp, which was outstanding – tart and not too sweet (they only use natural sweeteners). I also took home the handmade garnet yam gnocchi with sage and oregano sauce. The subtly sweet and savory combination was so well executed that I didn’t mind the few gnocchi that fell apart during reheating.
