Seattle's Madison/Madrona Farmer's Market

One of the amazing things about Seattle’s temperate climate is the wealth of local fresh foods available year round! Eating what’s in season and grown locally has many advantages for your body, your budget and the planet!

For example, foods grown locally and in season are picked at the peak of ripeness when they are the most flavorful and have the most nutrients. On the other hand, most out of season produce found in the grocery stores are picked while still immature because of the long distances they are often shipped. These foods are missing important vitamins and minerals, as well as flavor and aroma! Who wants to eat tasteless fruits and veggies that have traveled an average of 1500-2500 miles? The greenhouse gas emissions alone are enough to make me lose my apatite!

Instead try eating what’s in season and grown in the great Northwest, not only will your body thank you but your pocketbook will too. The abundance of a seasonal, local product usually means it’s less expensive (supply and demand baby!) especially at your neighborhood farmer’s market. As well, supporting local farmers means the money you spend will re-circulate throughout our community creating more abundance for everyone!

Can’t get out to the farmer’s market? Consider joining a community supported agriculture (CSA) group where weekly or bi-weekly boxes of seasonal local produce are delivered to your door or some other convenient distribution location. Click here for more information on local CSAs from Puget Sound Fresh. Click here for a seasonal food calendar from the Seattle Neighborhood Farmer’s Market Alliance. Take a look and start eating!
