Looking for a great Christmas gift for the gearhead in your life? Take a look at the many GPS units that are out there. There are two types of gearheads, those that love maps and the challenge of navigating to a destination and those that can’t find their way out of a paper bag. Both types will like a GPS, the first because it’s cool and techy, the second because they will become an expert navigator.
This year, there are many different units to choose from, the most basic units start at about $100. These usually give on-screen turn-by-turn guidance and most will provide spoken directions. The next step up will add spoken street names to the direction call outs. More money will add features such as traffic information and Bluetooth speakerphone capability. Most brands also feature widescreen models that give a larger picture for easier reading.
When choosing, check to make sure the unit has a built-in rechargeable battery, making it easy to power-up and set your destination while walking to the car. The kit should include a car power cord to allow long trips without worry about battery life. Most units include some type of suction-cup mount to attach the unit to the windshield. Some include an optional beanbag mount that lets the unit sit on top of the dash. Whatever mount you use, don’t leave the GPS in the car unattended, they have become a top smash-and-grab target.TomTom One XL
I have tried several units and I find the Garmin is one of the easiest to use; I had my first destination programmed within five minutes of opening the box. TomTom also makes nice units. One neat feature on some of their models is downloadable celebrity voices for the turn-by-turn directions. My favorite is John Cleese of Monty Python fame, but maybe you would rather have Mr. T telling you to “turn here fool!” Most of the top names also provide regular updates for the built-in maps, essential to keep up with the local road construction crews.
GPS’s are this year’s hot item, available almost everywhere, watch for a good sale at your favorite electronics retailer.
