It's hard to imagine that it's almost time for school to start; especially in Montgomery County, Maryland, because it feels like we just left for the summer.  However, if we look at a calendar we get a quick reality check.  Let's see, two weeks and counting for the students, one week for the teachers, and the poor counselor, who usually gets no respect, has been working all summer.

A typical question I'm asked is, "What do you do in the summer?"  Actually, I have a lot to keep me busy, but new enrollees and schedule conflicts lead the list.  So far this summer, I've enrolled six new students.  And as we draw closer to the August 31st opening, I've noticed even more scheduled within the next two weeks.  I definitely want them to come now, before the first day of school, so their schedule will be ready on August 31st.

Sometimes, I've had students wait until the first day of school to enroll.  Please don't make that choice.  It's a major mistake, unless you have no control over the situation.  There is a possibility that you may be lacking some of the documents required for enrollment; and if so, your first day of school will be delayed.

We will not schedule appointments for new enrollees on the first day of school....it's too hectic.  Many guidance departments have the same policy.  So if you've moved to a new area, or you know you are transferring to a new school, don't procrastinate, call now and schedule your appointment to enroll.

At this point, every day is critical as it pertains to your schedule and your transition to your new school.  Here are some questions to ask as you go through this process:

         1.   What documents, residency/utility/health/academic, must I bring to the appointment?

          2.  What communication has been mailed home regarding transportation, fees, important dates, school calendar, lunch options, sport try-outs, etc.?

          3.   Do you have Edline and/or interims?  What academic support do you offer?

          4.   Is there a special orientation for freshmen and/or upper classmen before school begins?

          5.   Do you have a summer reading list and math packet requirement?

If you will be attending a new school 2009-10, be positive, use good judgment, don't be afraid to ask questions, and best wishes for a successful year.
