Each year, NASA holds an engineering design challenge for students across the U.S. According to the NASA website, "The NASA Engineering Design Challenge connects students with the challenges faced by NASA engineers as they design the next generation of space vehicles, habitats and technology." For 2008. the challenge involved having students design and evaluate growth chambers for two control groups of seeds; cinnamon basil seeds flown in space and earth-based cinnamon basil seeds. The space flown seeds were provided from a mission flown by the space shuttle Endeavor where over 10 million cinnamon basil seeds were carried within two collapsible plant growth chambers.
While the challenge has ended, the seeds and accompanying educational materials are still available for free through NASA's website, not including shipping. The site lists that kits will be available as long as supplies last. As of this month, plenty of kits are still available.
The Activity Kit includes the following items ($6.50 flat rate shipping):
--Five packets of seeds. Each packet includes one envelope of space seeds and one envelope of Earth seeds.
--Liftoff to Learning: Plants in Space DVD.
--The Ozone Monitoring Garden Lithograph.
--The Engineering Design Challenge: Lunar Plant Growth Chamber Bookmark.
Seed packets are only available for distribution to residents of the United States, U.S. territories and outlying areas (American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Midway Islands, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands).
