Michael Feinstein, who looks a lot younger than his 53 years, sang his favorite Sinatra standards at the Music Center at Strathmore on Nov. 8. The concert was all in support of his latest album, "The Sinatra Project."
The native of Columbus, Ohio, was not afraid to name drop his hometown or offer a trip there as a prize to whomever could name the man who wrote the most Sinatra songs. Aside from discussing the seat of Franklin County, the excellent piano player thrilled the crowd with his selections from the catalog of Ol' Blue Eyes.
Feinstein said he was going to provide his own spin on the songs instead of just copying Sinatra's versions but I wouldn't have known the difference. Never having been a big fan of Sinatra I only recognized one song before the encore. Despite that, I thought the concert was fantastic.
I have always thought that Sinatra was a bit overrated and Dean Martin underrated. My thinking hasn't exactly changed on that but now I have a whole new appreciation for Sinatra because of Feinstein's interpretations. Furthermore, I'm interested in hearing more from both because of the show. It is rare that a concert makes me want to hear more from the artist performing, let alone anyone else. But Feinstein was so good he somehow wanted to make me hear more from both.
Feinstein's "The Sinatra Project" CD can be purchased by clicking here. It is 13.99 for a CD, and an extra five bucks if you want it autographed.
