Jane Krakowski made no bones about it. She called her performance at the Kennedy Center on October 3, "under rehearsed." A few times she apologetically told the sold out audience that she just got a song or that she was sick and couldn't hit all the notes she'd like. None of that mattered.
What Krakowski lacked in health and polish she more than made up for with her humor, wit and looks. Krakowski came out in the red dress you see to your right. She immediately stretched out on top of a piano and sang "The Laziest Gal In Town." She was anything but.
Krakowski did not simply lay across the piano and sing. She masterfully played the role of a sultry cabaret chanteuse, singing seductively and covering up enough skin to be respectful but not too much to make you think she's lost any speed off her fastball.
Krakowski lamented to the crowd that in a Washington Post article, she was listed as 41-years-old despite the fact that her birthday isn't until October 11. Well, the product of Parsippany, New Jersey, certainly doesn't look like she's anywhere near the big 4-1.
Perhaps best known as Jenna Maroney in "30 Rock" on NBC, Krakowski subtlely reminded people that she is an accomplished denizen of the theater, winning a Tony and an Olivier Award. But, it was never done in an overbearing way.
In her first performance in Washington, D.C. and her first in cabaret, Krakowski routinely made the audience laugh with her humorous songs and anecdotes. She said how she admired Gwen Stefani for turning "If I Were A Rich Man" into a rap song, so she gave it a try with "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend." Krakowski may never win a rap battle with Eminem on 8 Mile but she did cleverly spit lines like "One rock ain't enough. Hell, let's make it 30!"
Throughout the show Krakowski thanked the audience for coming, and wasn't afraid to mention that she wasn't sure how many people would show up. If Krakowski chooses to grace the Kennedy Center with her presence again she may have to find a new place to perform. She sold out two shows in the Terrace Theater and considering how well she was received, it appears as if the D.C. rookie has more than stated her case for one of the big halls downstairs.
If anyone missed the show and still wants to see the exceptional singer, she's in New York now through Oct. 17 for a show called "Jane Krakowski Has Sold Out . . .Tickets Available." You can get tickets by clicking here.
