December 16 may not have the same cache as July 4, but it will be just as important for some new Americans. The National Archives is holding a naturalization ceremony at 10 a.m. on Dec. 16, in honor of of the 217th anniversary of the adoption of the Bill of Rights. Those really up on their high school civics lessons will remember that the Bill of Rights was actually adopted on Dec. 15. Nevertheless, this service is happening on the 16th.
What makes this naturalization service really special is that it will occur in front of the "Charters of Freedom" as the Archives calls them. These are the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. For those of you who will be able to attend, it will certainly be a special day. Becoming a U.S. citizen in front of the documents that heledp create this nation seems like the best way to do it. In a city where special events and history surround you, this ceremony stands out as something truly American for all Americans to enjoy, both new and old.
