National Geographic is kicking off the holiday shopping season this weekend, well, at least for me. It is bringing in just about anything it has ever sold or can slap a logo on and selling it at a huge discount at the D.C. Armory. This warehouse sale is being held from Friday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I remember going to this sale with my parents a few times when I was a child and all I can recall is it being a madhouse. There were product and people strewn all over the place and kids like me running around. This year should be no different. National Geographic is bringing in 14 tractor trailers with almost everything the organization has sold over the past five years. Many of the items have been in National Geographic's gift catalogs over the years. Prices are said to be discounted up to 90 percent.
I will be there at 9 a.m. sharp on Saturday and I am in the market for antique-looking, wall-sized maps. So if you see someone in a black Sean John velour zip-up racing towards you and the map section, it is best to get out of the way. Something tells me I will be walking away with more than just a map, though.
"This year's sale is one of the largest ever. We have more than 600 different products — that's 250,000 of the best-quality books, maps, toys, puzzles, travel accessories and gifts from around the world," said National Geographic's Bill O'Donnell, director of operations, in a release.
New to the sale this year will be a display of framed prints of some of National Geographic's best photographic work, which are also available at www.printsNGS.com.
The D.C. Armory is not the most convenient place in the world to get to. It is close to the Stadium-Armory Metro stop, but if you buy anything big or bulky, you'll have to schlep it back on Metro. I will be driving and there are plenty of spots around to park.
