A self-proclaimed “children’s book junkie,” homeschooling mom Lora Dowling knows how expensive it can be to build a home library. Her husband, Darrin, a public school math teacher who also holds a reading endorsement, is a book lover, too. So, the couple did what any reasonable book-loving family would do…. They turned an under-utilized room in their southside Des Moines home into a used book store!
Not only do daughers Madelyn (7) and Joselyn (4) get access to tons of books, the Dowlings’ hobby-turned-business is a clever way to generate some extra income and offer a needed service to other bargain-hunting bibliophiles.
Their shop, The Picture Book Patch, offers both brand new and lightly used children’s books at “berry” good prices, with most books priced at $3.00 or less. You can find a little bit of everything from baby board books to teen chapter books to homeschooling curriculum and teaching aids.
Lora also depends on her customers as a primary source for acquiring books, so be sure to clear off your bookshelf before you go shop; you might be able to trade in your old treasures for a new read.
The Dowling family opens their book room by appointment only. Be sure to visit the Picture Book Patch website for contact information, coupons and directions
