Whole Wheat pitas are a great alternative to pizza dough.

Need a little pick-me-up snack for the family without having to make something greasy from a bag in the freezer, or the same ol' turkey sandwich?

Try this treat next time you're in need of a healthy mid-day meal. It's affordable, and full of nutrients and healthy goodness.

1 pack whole wheat pitas

1 15 ounce jar of preferred pasta sauce

Assorted vegetables, such as black olives, artichoke hearts, broccoli, bell peppers, mushrooms, or anything else you prefer!

1 bag of shredded low-fat cheese, try something like Monterey Jack or Colby

For a little something extra, add a few slices of grilled chicken or steak

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Salt and Pepper

Preheat your oven to about 400. Brush the pitas with a little EVOO, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toast in oven until golden. Remove from oven, and coat in pasta sauce.

Spread the shredded cheese over the sauce... don't put too much, or the pita will be hard to eat smothered in cheese! Ad some of your favorite vegetables and a protein like chicken or steak. (For a little something extra, try adding a few tofu slices if you'd like to try a vegetarian pizza!)

Place in oven and cook until cheese is melted and golden brown. Pull out of oven, but allow about a minute or two for the cheese to set. Slice, and enjoy!!
