R.I.P. meets the spirits of Ramblewood

It looks like a haunted house. That was my first thought as we drove up to the old white house located within Ramblewood Campgrounds (http://www.ramblewood.com) in Darlington, MD. Although the sun was shining brightly, the peaceful summer day seemed shadowed by earlier tragedies that had taken place within the crumbling walls of the once lovely Victorian mansion.
Its past is shrouded in mystery, although historical research by the Maryland Paranormal Research Team (MPRT) (http://www.mprt.net ) remains ongoing. MPRT was the first group invited in to do an official paranormal investigation of “Ramblewood House” and they experienced cold spots, being touched, numerous EVPs, and a memorable full body apparition. The investigators of R.I.P. were looking forward to a lively evening.
Spirits at Ramblewood House
Activities reported by MPRT and other groups include an armoire in one of the back bedrooms that shakes (it’s been both heard and seen moving), a vibrating/levitating bed, ghostly touches, a full body apparition, and more. Many EVPs have been collected from all parts of the house. There have been shadows reported on the grounds and an apparition has been spotted on one of the benches near the river.
The house itself has been the scene of one suicide; a woman hanged herself in the attic. The maid discovered her body and fled in panic down the front staircase, where she tripped and broke her neck, resulting in yet another fatality. There have been reports of child spirits, a boy and a girl.
The house was once a stop on the Underground Railroad. The basement features a sealed-off tunnel that leads from the cellar of the house down to the Susquehanna River. It is only a short distance from the house to the Mason Dixon line, which was the boundary between slave states and free states prior to the Civil War.
Dave Weigert, founder of MPRT, explained his sighting of an unidentified visitor at Ramblewood. “It was early morning, around 5:00 am, and I had been hosting a paranormal group that arrived the previous evening. Although it was early, I was fully awake when I heard the front door open and close with the distinctive sound that it makes and I then saw a woman walk into the foyer. I was on the sofa in the front room on the left as you enter the house. The woman made eye contact with me and then quickly walked up the stairs. Out of curiosity, I followed her, but found that she was not in any of the upstairs bedrooms or in the attic. She apparently went directly up the stairs and simply vanished. Later that morning at breakfast, I asked the group if anyone new had arrived since the previous evening and they said no. To this day, no one has been able to identify the woman I saw that morning. It remains a mystery.”
R.I.P.’s Investigation Begins
R.I.P. Science Advisor Mr. D brought the Electric Field Generator (EFG), an experimental device designed to measure disturbances in electromagnetic fields and, theoretically, provide a source of energy for spirits to draw upon to assist them in manifesting or communicating. Initial testing showed nothing noteworthy to report. D kept busy collecting baseline recordings of the unique “wiring” signature of the house, which would prove to be useful when analyzing background noise and possible EVPs.
Rene (R.I.P.’s Psychic Medium) and I immediately felt uneasy on the staircase and our EMF meters confirmed high readings. The house itself felt active to us – Mike had the same feelings -, although not necessarily in a negative sense. None of the other investigators were picking up anything.
While Lisa interviewed Dave in-depth about his experiences in the house, Mike and I decided to slip away to the attic to conduct an EVP session. We were drawn to the first room on the right. Making ourselves as comfortable as possible on the hard wooden floor, we tried to absorb the atmosphere of the location. Almost immediately, Mike began seeing shadows near me. We invited any spirits present to communicate with us and received a loud tap in response to our invitation. Both of us heard it audibly and it is also obvious when we played back our digital voice recorders later during Evidence Review. It seemed to originate inside the attic room where we were seated. We explored our surroundings further in an attempt to find an explanation for what we had heard. We found that there were no tree branches to brush against the window (and no wind at all outside), no people wandering around the grounds below us, and only muffled sounds from the first two floors. The “tap,” however, was loud and clear.
Mike and I began to ask questions, while monitoring the K2 meter, another EMF meter nearby, and a temperature measuring device. We made sure that our equipment was not in close enough proximity to react to each other.
The K2 meter immediately began flashing in response to our questions. We devised a code of one flash for “yes” and no flashes for “no.” We later realized that our methodology was somewhat flawed and that we should have designated a certain number of flashes for “no” rather than merely asking for the absence of a flash. Another lesson learned.
Using our agreed-upon system, the spirit indicated that it was a female and we were able to successfully determine that she was nine years old. She said that her brother was with her, which lent credence to the reports of child spirits in the house. The session continued for a few minutes more. We finally ended it by promising to return with additional friends for the lively young spirit to meet.
Second EVP Session Yields Even Better Results
After about another 30 minutes or so, Lisa, Mike, and I returned to the same attic room to see if we could make contact with the young girl again. We remembered to set up a camera for this session. To our surprise, the K2 responses began immediately and our spirit seemed just as eager to communicate as she had been previously. Just as in the first session, the other EMF meter showed minimal fluctuations and there were no temperature spikes, although we noted a brief cold spot in between Lisa and I. But the K2 meter certainly seemed to be delivering intelligent responses to our questions and even sometimes to random comments that we made during the session when we were speaking with each other.
An Unexpected Event during the Spirit Circle
After a thorough investigation of the house itself, we decided to conduct a Spirit Circle in the attic cupola room, directly below where the unhappy former resident is reported to have hung herself. Psychic medium Rene opened the Spirit Circle and began receiving impressions, while Mike and I used our pendulums to confirm the information he was transmitting.
At one point, Rene asked if anyone was getting a name. Mike said “Sharon,” but I immediately said, “No, it’s an S name, but it’s not Sharon. Her name is Sarah.” Our pendulums confirmed that her name was indeed Sarah. Once again, we were encountering the nine year old girl who had welcomed us to the attic earlier. Rene felt that she had her brother with her and at least one adult. Neither Lisa, Mike, nor I had told Rene any of the details of our earlier encounters in the attic, but merely reported that we seemed to have had some K2 hits and possibly some intelligent responses.
Sue mentioned that she was feeling a cold spot next to her. Upon further investigation, she found that a pane of glass was broken in the one of the windows behind her and she determined that the missing glass had accounted for the drop in temperature. However, all of us reported chills and goose bumps at various times throughout the Spirit Circle and one missing pane of glass on a warm early summer night did not seem to be an adequate explanation for this ongoing phenomena.
An unexpected twist occurred when Rene reported that Sarah was telling him that she wanted to move on, but needed our help to do so. We experienced a momentary ethical conflict: should we honor her request and do our best to help? What about the other spirits who may be left behind?
However, we quickly decided that we needed to assist this spirit in whatever way we could. We explained to her that we were calling in her guides and family members in spirit and that they would help her cross over. Then, we formed a portal with white/pink light and concentrated on raising our energy so that she could use it as needed. During this event, everyone in the Spirit Circle – including those who consider themselves “psychic as a doorknob” – experienced chills and goose bumps. As the energy continued to build, we all heard a loud sound that continued for approximately 30 seconds. It was a “white noise” type of sound, not the traditional “feedback” interference that sometimes occurs with audio equipment. It ended as suddenly as it had begun and the room now felt empty. Our little girl spirit had moved on.
Further Details on Audio Interference
I asked Marianna, our Director and a professional sound recordist, to write up her interpretation of the microphone anomaly experienced during the Spirit Circle. This is her response:
“Pat and Mike, two members of R.I.P., were mic'd up with wirelesses microphones. Their voices were being captured by a professional microphone, which sent the sound over a radio frequency (RF) with a transmitter to the sound mixer that had the receiver. The sound being picked up was "clean"—i.e., there was not any RF interference during the session (no "shushing," no drop-off of the sound--such as microseconds of silence, clicks, "phhts"--in addition to no undulating, high-pitched tones typical of an interference by another RF source, such as cell phones, radio station signals, etc.). However, during the session, when Rene was asking everyone to concentrate and create energy to help the entity cross over, the sound from BOTH mics all of a sudden changed instantly and changed to an audible, loud, "shushing" continuous noise (think of "white snow" on a TV; for example, such as in the movie "Poltergeist" when the little girl stares at the TV’s white-snow picture image that is emitting a "shushing" noise). My sound feed became unusable (no voices anymore). I quickly switched to the camera mic, which was working fine. Strangely, once this part of the session was over—that is, they were finished "helping" the entity--and I switched the camera back to the wireless mics, each person's mic sound was perfect once again. My technical viewpoint: at the beginning of the session where the R.I.P. members "helped" an entity, something in the RF airwaves--energy--interfered with the RF signals coming from each person's wireless mic (compared to the earlier part of the session, when there was not any interference)."
