AfterDark Paranormal Investigations (ADPI), based in Louisville, KY, has conducted two investigations of the infamous Sallie House in Atchison, KS. Their experiences are chronicled here.

The Sallie House, of course, was the home of the Pickman family, until constant paranormal activities – and actual physical attacks – caused them to flee. The Pickman’s ordeal has been recounted in Discovery Channel’s “Haunted Town,” as well as a Showtime move, “The Heartland Ghost.” The house remains notorious for the level and viciousness of its activities.

THE SALLIE HOUSE: LABORATORY OF THE PARANORMAL

The Sallie House was named for the first entity found here – a little girl named Sallie – identified by a psychic in 1996. Since that time, more and more entities have been identified, leading researchers to wonder if they have somehow been attracted by the house itself. Some theorize that it may be a “portal” of some type – a bridge between life and death. Others feel that evil beings are attracted to the location for unknown reasons. Paranormal activities include full body apparitions, objects flying through the air, knocks, thuds, thumps and other assorted noises, foul smells, and actual physical harm to the former occupants and some investigators, including scratches, burns, and cuts. An amazing number of EVPs have been captured at this location and many are featured in the “EVP Gallery” on the Sallie House website.

Many ghost hunters have investigated the house, using every type of equipment available, and they’ve captured a large amount of additional evidence, some of which is posted on this same website. Debra Pickman, one of the owners of the house, says her goal is to further paranormal studies, while also expanding their knowledge of the history of the house, much of which remains shrouded in mystery.

THE FIRST INVESTIGATION

The ADPI team arrived at The Sallie House around 3:00 pm on the afternoon of their first investigation. Exhausted after their ten hour drive, team members neglected to say their usual prayer of protection before beginning the investigation. Initially, the house felt fine – just a vague feeling that there might be some presence there beside themselves. J.C., the Lead Investigator/ADPI Sensitive, predicted that “things are going to start going crazy around midnight!”

The team set up cameras in the dining room, children’s room, master bedroom, and basement, with voice recorders turned on and in view of each camera. The team began their sweep through the house with temperature and EMF readings taken every hour. With each hour that went by, the EMF meters recorded higher readings, particularly on the upper level.

As midnight approached, ADPI investigators began noticing equipment problems with two of the video cameras. Even after changing the tape in the children’s room, that camera could not record. The camera in the living room stopped recording after only 30 minutes. This equipment had worked perfectly in other investigations and the ADPI team had checked it out prior to setup.

At approximately 12:05 am, J.C. cried for help. He had been sitting cross legged on the floor in the master bedroom when he was picked up and thrown against the outer wall and knocked unconscious for a moment. Other team members helped him downstairs, where he told them that his stomach felt as though it was burning. Upon inspection, he had a large area on his mid-section that looked like carpet burn/scratches. Despite his injuries, he insisted that the team go back upstairs and complete the investigation. J.C. told them that he could see an inhuman-looking entity in the children’s room. The ADPI team went on “ghost watch” for the rest of the night, surrounded by whispering sounds and other unidentifiable noises. Upon his return home, J.C. visited the emergency room at  the local hospital and was diagnosed with a severe concussion.

THE FINAL INVESTIGATION

ADPI’s second investigation began with a prayer for protection. Father David Price from Saint Christopher’s Old Catholic Church was with the team. After setting up their equipment and starting to record baseline readings, the team once again noted that EMFs were increasing as it got closer to midnight. J.C., Kristina, and Jeff recorded high EMF spikes in the master bedroom, where J.C. had previously been attacked. There was no natural EMF source identified in the house.

Investigators reported seeing a young girl walk across the upstairs hallway and they also heard unidentified voices in the house. Investigators took numerous photos and the sequence below shows several captured in the master bedroom. They were later analyzed and enhanced to show detail.

ORIGINAL PHOTO: You can see ADPI investigator Francis Etienne’s shoulder and Father David’s reflection in the lower right and the image behind him looks like a man somewhat taller than Father David. If you look closely, you can barely see something else behind that figure.

PHOTO #2: Made photo into negative and added simple contrast to original.

PHOTO #3: Added even more contrast/brightness. Can clearly see more features, including horns and chest.

The website shows the entire sequence of photos, including some using infrared film, and explains at each step how the photos were analyzed and brightness/contrast adjusted without compromising the integrity of the original photo.

Father David and the ADPI team performed a blessing of the house before they left the next morning. However, activity continues at The Sallie House.
