Black cats have always been associated with the supernatural, so it's not surprising that they've become a common symbol of Halloween. Black cats are, of course, beautiful rather than evil so it's hardly fair to the felines.

Most recently in history, the Church conducted its infamous centuries-long persecution of so-called witches and, by extension, their cats. Of course, in reality, the evil "witches" tortured and killed by religious authorities during what has become known as the "Burning Times" were simply the community's wise women (and some men), skilled in the arts of herbal remedies and folk medicine. They made easy targets because they were different in some way and those who stand out from the crowd are always vulnerable. Because they were often people who chose to live in harmony with nature and the world around them, many were animal lovers and kind to cats. In any case, they were a threat to the Church's authority and were punished appropriately, along with their cat companions.

Unfortunately, black cats in particular have never entirely escaped the negative associations attributed to the color of their fur. Owners of black cats who go outside often wisely keep their cats indoors around Halloween, due to fears for their safety. Animal rescue groups frequently launch "Black is Beautiful" campaigns in an effort to help people understand that fur color has no effect whatsoever on personality, but black cats (and even dogs) are often overlooked and remain unadopted. Of course, those who are lucky enough to be owned by a black cat know that these fabulous felines are just as sweet and loving as any others.

We have a black ghost cat. She first appeared around ten years ago in our house in Dallas. When we moved back to northern Virginia in 2003, we wondered if we had seen the last of her but we needn't have worried. She showed up at our new place almost immediately. And, when we moved to another house this past July, our little black ghost cat was there to welcome us. We see glimpses of the black cat at least once a week. Some sightings have been far more than glimpses and she's appeared to us as solid and three dimensional. My husband and I have frequently felt an invisible cat jump up on the bed, when the door was closed and our physical cats were elsewhere in the house. Our "living" cats take the black cat's presence in stride, although they seem to be aware of her. We sometimes hear crunching in the cat bowl or scratching in the litter box when all of our cats are present and accounted for and could not possibly be in two places at once.

Our little ghost cat has become so much a part of our lives that we find ourselves talking to her and reassuring her that she's welcome and that she will always have a home with us. For a couple of paranormal investigators, living with a ghost is nothing to be scared of!
