Nico Dacumos, who just turned 30, has been writing since the age of 12. “I was listening to some music at dusk and the feeling that came over me as I listened to it compelled me to fill a notepad with about 15 poems. I have been writing ever since.” Hailing from San Diego, he became a regular at coffeehouses’ open mics during his teens By his early 20s, Dacumos was doing tons of different reading gigs in Northampton and Amherst, Massachusetts and posting regularly on his blog, “Mentality: Check Your Soul.”
“In the past 5 years I have begun to develop myself as a performer and have become interested in acting and producing for the stage.” In fact, earlier this month, Dacumos produced and co-wrote his first play “Translations” which premiered on June 8th as part of the National Queer Arts Festival. “At all these different points my art has been centered around telling stories that give queer, trans, and people of color voice, hope, and inspiration.” In “Translations,” friends are re-united through their family histories, discovering decades-long love affairs born during student protests in Mexico City, the height of Black Power in Oakland, and the battle against Martial Law in the Philippines. Queer histories and communities collide in "Translations," a multi-genre theater piece. “Translations” is a collaborative script by DeWayne Dickerson, Natalia Vigil, and Dacumos with a cast of talented queer actors. The action drops us into the thick of experiences left untold for a generation, shining light on the legacies that bring us where we are today — in our hearts and identities, on the streets and under the sheets. Though there is no set date for a re-staging of “Translations,” which sold out a week before its debut, Dacumos is hard at work to show the play again soon, perhaps in August.
Dacumos’ second appearance for NQAF is with QPOCalypse NOW! a Mangos with Chili production featuring all new collaborative work by Amir Rabiyah, Yosimar Reyes, Maceo Cabrera Estévez, King TuffNStuff ,Thisway/Thatway, Charleston Chu, Zuleikha Mahmood, Cherry Galette, Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, and of course Dacumos. The next Mangos with Chili production will be “Encuentros,” the third installment of a queer and trans immigrant and first-generation showcase that was first produced in Fall 2007. “Encuentros” is set to take place in October 2009.
OPOCalypse NOW! is a collaborative, multi-genre show that works to explore visions of the end of the world and what comes after: “The end times are upon us! Don't you want to know how beautiful, fabulous, and badass queer and trans people of color communities are getting ready for the Rapture? Who's going to heaven? Who's going to hell? Who's going to sleep with who before it all goes down? The Mangos with Chili performance crew is going to have all the answers!” Dacumos wants everyone to know: “I will be playing a zombie. So bring your brains.”
