One of the benefits of being a military family are the discounts and savings you can receive by shopping at a military NEX or PX or commissary. While there is debate on just how much you can save going through AAFES or DeCA instead of your local store (conservative estimates are 25 to 30 percent), military families know for certain they save at least the cost of tax when they shop through those agencies.

But if you are National Guard or Reserve or active military who don't live near an active military installation like the majority of Nashvillians, the chances of being able to use those benefits are somewhat slim unless you don't mind making the hour-plus drive to Ft. Campbell or to Huntsville's Red Stone Arsenal.

That's where the generosity and appreciation of local area businesses can help. There are many local businesses and chain stores who offer military discounts to service members and their families but they aren't always advertised. I did some digging though and discovered that many of the favorite destinations around Nashville offer a discount, just in time for summer!

In today's economically challenging times, every little bit helps. And if you aren't sure? ASK. I often find that even if a store or service doesn't have a regular policy for military discounts, they will often offer 10 or 15% just because you made the effort to ask for it.

Keep in mind that most businesses will require military identification to receive the discount, and you will most likely have to ask - they aren't always going to remember or volunteer that information. Enjoy perusing the list I've compiled below - and if you know of a business or service that offers a military discount, let me know and I'll be sure to add it to an updated list soon.
