West Harlem Piers is new greenspace in Harlem

Over the weekend local officials gathered along the riverfront to welcome a new patch of green to the concrete jungle. The West Harlem Piers was formerly used as a parking lot for Fairway Market customers. Through the efforts of Community Board 9 and a handful of other grassroots organizations the idea to convert the strip of blight into usable green space was realized. The new pedestrian and bike friendly path connects the lower Manhattan Hudson River bike-way with Upper Manhattan.

In addition to the bike path, there is a play fountain for children, two piers (one for fishing) and a kayak launch. There are future plans to include an excursion ferry to carry passengers from lower Manhattans piers like Chelsea Piers and South Street Seaport to the emerging restaurant row along the waterfront.

Attending the ribbon cutting ceremony was Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY15) and other local officials who reminisced about growing up in Upper Manhattan.
