One year after celebrating its 30th anniversary, the International Festival of Authors has been given a cash injection from Ontario's Trillium Foundation.

The 10-day festival, which is held at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre and celebrates the best in contemporary world literature, will receive a grant of $200,000 to be paid over a three-year period.

With its touring component, IFOA Ontario, which allows the festival to visit 7 Ontario stops, the Festival allows residents of the city of Toronto and beyond to enjoy various readings, workshops, and roundtable discussions.

Other Harbourfront Centre Programs
Home to the Authors at Harbourfront Centre programme, which is a weekly reading series from September to June, as well as YoungIFOA in October, and ALOUD: a Celebration for Young Readers with Forest of Reading® Festival of Trees™ in May, the Harbourfront Centre is an important hub of literacy and the arts for the city of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

Sustainability in the arts

According to a report from the Trillium Foundation, an additional $225,000 grant was approved in November 2009 by the foundation's Board of Directors to reduce the carbon footprint of the 10-acre arts & culture facility along Toronto's waterfront.

Arts at risk
With the closing of local bookstores, the threat of losing others, and cuts to arts programs, the Harbourfront Centre is more than just a valuable resource - it fosters the very heart of creativity in our city.

Unless it involves long term infrastructure, the arts community is usually at the bottom of the governments priority list. With that being said, $200,000 over 3 years for a 10 day event is a pretty good start. And the best way to show the government that their investment was in fact worthwhile, would be for the overwhelming support of the general public.
