Toronto-based e-book community Wattpad has a new partnership that will provide independent authors the ability to publish and distribute their e-works.
In a move that sees Wattpad partnering with popular self-publishing website Smashwords, authors who prefer this modern form of publishing now have another forum to do so.
In a press release from Wattpad, the partnership is described as providing “added integration so that Wattpad users can sell books via Smashwords and Smashwords authors can promote free works on Wattpad”.
"Wattpad represents a fabulous training ground where authors can hone their craft and prepare their writing for distribution and sale at Smashwords," said Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords. "Current Smashwords authors can benefit from Wattpad as well by using it to share stories, gain feedback and develop fan followings."
This past Spring, Wattpad teamed up with Lulu.Com to create the Wattpad Marketplace. With this pairing, users of the writing-meets-social-networking website are able to sell their self-published books on the already well-established online publishing site.
Their new deal with Smashwords allows authors to get a piece of the eBook pie, while giving writers the potential to reach millions of readers who prefer to read on-the-go. Cross-promotion between the two sites, including the linking of one’s profiles on either site, will give authors more visibility and give readers another choice in how they want to read.
Once polished on Wattpad, authors can distribute their works on Smashwords in multi-format, DRM-free ebooks that readers can sample, purchase and read on any e-reader.
The Bottom Line
Both sites are free to join, and with the built-in social networking aspect of Wattpad, which allows authors to link to their Twitter, MySpace and Facebook profile, this partnership makes writing amd promoting one’s work seamless.
