For Ian Rogers, author of the chapbook Temporary Monsters which was published by Toronto's Burning Effigy Press, writing is a balance of work and play.

While some writers may pursue their career with only their creative thinking caps on, Rogers believes that by overlooking the business side, writers are doing themselves a certain disservice.

I read a lot of author blogs, and many beginners don't seem to know, or care, about promoting themselves and making smart business decisions.

Too many want to be published at any cost, and they want to do it right away. Since the technology now exists for them to this, we are seeing a glut of really awful books being published.

There are some good ones, too, but it's so hard to find them amongst all the tripe.

Whether you agree with Ian's opinions or have an opposing view, hearing from a writer who has experience with a smaller press provides a unique insight for other authors who are looking for the publisher that suits their work best.

If you would like to hear more about Ian's adventures in small press publishing, be sure to read Part Two of my interview with the Peterborough author.

Ian’s chapbook Temporary Monsters was published by Toronto's Burning Effigy Press in September 2009, with a 2nd printing in November 2009. You can pick up a signed copy from Burning Effigy or Horror Mall.

About Temporary Monsters:

Felix Renn is a private investigator in a supernatural world, an alternate reality where a dark dimension called The Black Lands co-exists alongside our own. Travelling to and from The Black Lands is dangerous — and illegal — but that doesn't stop some of the creatures that reside there from crossing over into our world from time to time.

After a man goes berserk in a posh Toronto restaurant, Felix suddenly finds himself torn between both worlds as he is drawn into a deadly game of movies, murder, and monsters.
