The Kids' (and parents', too!) Book of Good Sportsmanship: An easy-to-read guide for families ~ Leslie A. Susskind
The Kids' (and parents', too!) Book of Good Sportsmanship is a guidebook for raising winners, both on and off the field!
Do you have little athletes in your family? Then this colorful, engaging book is the perfect way to help them understand what it means - and how important it is - to be a Good Sport. Soccer? Dancing? Swimming? Whatever sport they do, they'll learn easy, basic sports manners through reading familiar situations featuring kids just like them. Parents, you'll also find handy reminders for you with each tip, so that the entire family can learn to be Good Sports together. (Editorial reviews. Amazon.com) These twelve simple rules, along with equally simple illustrations, are a must for any junior athlete (and a good reminder to us parents, too) that there is much, much more to life that winning and losing. Susskind's tone is encouraging and inspiring, but never preachy. Each of these "rules of good sportsmanship" gives an example scenario (for both boys and girls), relevant questions, and provides a positive answer.By creating these characters, Susskind is able to coach, encourage, and correct without ever pointing a finger at the reader.
What I liked best about "The Kids' Book of Good Sportsmanship" is that the author empathized with the children in the examples, even when their motives were in question.
Who doesn't sometimes want to win at any cost? Who among us hasn't wanted to kick the dirt and walk away when we've lost? It's the "realness" of this book that inspired me, and will inspire other readers, young and old, to see that being a good sport means you can always win, regardless of what the scoreboard says.
The author teaches invaluable lessons, like:
"Being nice is simple...when you treat your teammates the way you would want to be treated."
"Trying your best not only makes you a better player, it makes you a player that others will want to play with!"
"Being a good winner means celebrating how great you and your team did, and also letting the other team know that you recognize how hard they played, too."
Susskind ends the book where any guidebook on children's sports should end...having fun:
"Having fun means loving what you're doing. Remember, the best athletes, are the best because, along with hard work and talent, they love what they do!”
"The Kids' (and parents', too!) Book of Good Sportsmanship" comes complete with a suitable for framing, Certificate of Completion to be signed by both child and parent
Every coach, trainer, team leader, or parent of a junior athlete should make this book required reading before your first practice of the year!
