Ekphrastic poetry is poetry that refers to another form of art such as a painting, photograph or film. There are many examples of ekphrastic poetry past and present including Keat's "Ode on a Grecian Urn" which refers to a piece of ancient pottery. I expect to see a burst of ekphrastic poetry coming soon once Michael Bay's new Transformers movie hits theaters because who would not want to write poetry about transforming car robot things? Basically, most poetry already refers to transforming car robot things. For example, consider Homer's Odyssey. Directly after the episode with the Cyclops is a battle with a transforming car robot thing.
In conclusion, you can write a poem about any piece of art that you enjoy and called it "ekphrastic poetry" which will make you sound very intelligent. Also, make sure you see Michael Bay's new Transformers movie for a giant surge of inspiration along with some great ideas for your own ekphrastic poetry.
