Southwest Review writing contest seeks submissions from unpublished writers

Southern Methodist University, home of Southwest Review and the David Nathan Meyerson Fiction Prize

 

Southwest Review, a publication of Southern Methodist University (SMU), has established the David Nathan Meyerson Fiction Prize. At stake is a $1,000 prize and publication in Southwest Review’s Fall 2010 edition.

The Meyerson Prize is open to writers who have never published a book of fiction, whether in novel or collected short story form.

Submissions are limited to 8,000 words and cannot be a simultaneous or previously published work.

Entry fee is $25. Submissions must be postmarked by May 1, 2010, to be considered.

There is a quick turnaround time as the winner will be announced in August.

The Writer’s Loft: Helmed by the famed Jerry Cleaver, author of Immediate Fiction and Professor of Professional Fiction at Northwestern University.

StoryStudio Chicago: StoryStudio’s mission is to “foster confidence and creativity in writing and storytelling through teaching, discussion, performance and community building. Writers and performers of all levels—from beginners to professionals—are invited to participate.”

Neighborhood Writing Alliance: The Neighborhood Writing Alliance holds several weekly writing workshops in neighborhoods across the city. Registration is free.

NewTown Writers: NewTown is a gay and lesbian writers’ group with regular workshops every two weeks. Registration is free.

TheUndeniables.org is an online critique group for those with restricted schedules who may not have the time to participate in a conventional classroom workshop. Registration is free. Wordpress account required.
