Friday market alerts: Highlights and Chisled In Rock hosting January contests

While it's still Friday, here's a couple of contests you should probably know about.

Highlights 2012 Fiction Contest
Deadline: January 31, 2012
Cost to enter: Free
Prize: $1000, 3 prizes awarded

The children's magazine Highlights challenges you to come up with "a funny story inspired by an unusual newspaper headline." Three prizes of $1000 (or tuition to the Highlights Foundation Writers Workshop, your choice) will be awarded; other submissions will be considered for purchase by Highlights. You must be 16 years or older at the time of submission. Stories must be no longer than 750 words, or 475 words if aimed at beginning readers.

Further details about what they do and don't want and how you can send it to them may be found on the contest guidelines page.

Rights caveat: The three winning entries will become the property of Highlights for Children. The transfer of all rights is a standard part of the Highlights contract, as explained in the Editorial Guidelines.

Incite Denver!
Deadline: February 1, 2012
Cost to enter: Free
Prize: Pitch opportunity

Chiseled in Rock, the official blog of Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, wants to help you connect with an agent. To that end, they invite local writers to submit the first 100 words of your completed manuscript. Your excerpt will be posted on the iWise Coach blog, where viewers will vote as to whether they want to read more.

If you want to win, you'll have to be present at the award ceremony, which will be held at the Mercury Cafe in Denver on February 29. And if you do win, you'll be invited onto the stage to present your pitch. Chiseled in Rock encourages you to make it "memorable and fun," and if that means interpretive dance, so be it... but bear in mind that all pitch performances will be recorded and posted on Facebook courtesy of literary agents Marisa A. Corvisiero and Katharine Sands. So plan your choreography accordingly! (Videos will also be displayed on the Chisled in Rock blog.)

For list of genres, contact information and other details necessary for submission, view the contest guidelines.
