Is America Ready for Bipartisanship?

Obama’s State of the Union was built upon a single idea: bipartisanship. Through the address, I found myself filled with an austere sense of hope; perhaps we aren’t too far gone to fix this yet, I thought. Such optimism faded out as quickly as the GOP Respondent faded in.

Never mind the fact that President Obama seems sincerely ready to throw all party affiliations out the window; the political right won’t have any such shenanigans. For fifteen minutes we were lucky enough to see “rising star” Paul Ryan explain why Republicans could do it better. Now, I’m not sure what exactly qualifies Ryan as a star for the GOP, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the next presidential primaries. But let’s not get caught up in the politics.

The President wants us to display unity, regardless of our political views; and this shouldn’t be a difficult thing, should it? Why can’t we just let bygones be bygones, and move forward, America? We Americans do big things. Let’s try to be big people, too, and let go of our prejudice.
