This weekend brought some sad news for Fantasmic fans. The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that the 45-foot-tall, 18,000 pound mechanical dragon in Fantasmic suffered technical issues during Saturday night's show and apparently collapsed.
"The dragon in Fantasmic experienced a technical issue last Saturday night," wrote Disney spokeswoman Betsy Sanchez. "We are working to fix the problem. At this time we are not able to determine when the dragon will reappear in the show; however, it will continue to run at its scheduled times."
According to information posted on fan site, Mice Chat, fans said the dragon, named Murphy by Disneyland Cast Members, collapsed during the show. When he collapsed, witnesses said the mist screens were increased to obscure any views of the broken dragon. The second show of the night was canceled and shortly thereafter photos surfaced on Twitter depicting the dragon with its head down.
Last June, the new version of Fantasmic debuted at Disneyland; however, the giant dragon was missing. Maleficent, the popular fire-breathing dragon from Sleeping Beauty, was visibly absent and rumors swirled. Disney failed to release an official statement, other than to just confirm Maleficent's absence was due to mechanical troubles.
Once the busy summer season was over, Maleficent was apparently fixed and back in the show, but almost a year later, it is out again.

You just have to love Disney fan sites and forums. If anything happens at Disneyland, they know about it first and have analyzed it endlessly. Plus, I really appreciate their defense & "adoption" of Murphy.
