After a smooth landing on the runway at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, fellow travelers and I were greeted by a gust of warm air as we exited the aircraft. Shortly after while waiting in line to pass immigration, a heavy but brief three minute rain shower cooled the West Indies breeze passing through the customs area.
But the passing rain didn’t dampen our first impressions of St. Kitts, a Caribbean island regarded as a Leeward Island and one of the smallest countries in the world. Staying true to the characteristic uber-friendly persona of her people, a welcoming taxi driver transported our party to ‘the island time clock’ and all the excitement of our upcoming week in paradise.
St. Kitts is barely seventy square miles in size, but it’s abounding with activity and entertainment for visitors, and it’s been relatively undiscovered by travelers who flock to more well-known islands like Aruba, St. Maarten, Jamaica, and others. St. Kitts has all that these other islands have, and it’s all totally “Kittitian.” Lounge by the water, sample the Caribbean’s varied cuisines, mingle with locals, take island tours, or explore the rustic town centres. Some of the best experiences we packed into seven days included excellent fresh seafood, beach bonfires, beautiful coastlines, warm sea breezes, plenty of sunshine, smooth Carib Lager, “Ting with a Sting,” volcano hikes, and plenty more.
