During a meeting in the Oval Office late Sunday afternoon, the White House released a statement indicating the president has issued an order to send more troops to Afghanistan.
The White House said the president has spent most of Monday speaking with foreign leaders to share the outlines of his new stragegy.
"This is not an open-ended commitment," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said. "We are there to partner with the Afghans, to train the Afghan national security forces, the army and the police so that they can provide security for their country and wage a battle against an unpopular insurgency."
Gibbs told reporters the president will discuss the details of his strategy during his speech on Tuesday. Obama will travel to the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York to announce his strategy during the scheduled speech.
