After a top Mexican drug kingpin was arrested early Saturday, the cartel he worked for initiated a coordinated attack against the Mexican government.
Arnoldo Rueda Medina - the second in command for the drug cartel known as La Familia Michoacana - was arrested on Saturday. Shortly after, the police station in which he was being held came under heavy rifle and grenade attack.
When the onslaught failed to free Medina, the Familia Michoacana launched a series of coordinated attacks in the cities of Acapulco, Morelia, Zitacuaro, Zamora, Lazaro Cardenas, Apatzingan, La Piedad and Huetamo. Combined, these attacks left three police officers and two soldiers dead.
While Mexico has become accustomed to constant violence that leaves nobody safe, the sophistication of this latest attack has horrified many.
