Seattle, Washington - After a two day manhunt, police found and fatally shot the suspect in the Washington slayings of four police officers. The confrontation and shooting occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. PST. The report stated that the suspect, Maurice Clemmons, 37, fired first at the police, who then return fire, hitting and mortally wounding him.

According to CNN, Ed Troyer, a spokesman Pierce County Sheriff's Department stated, “They came into contact with the suspect about an hour ago. Shots were fired and the suspect was shot and killed.”

Clemmons was accused of killing of four police officers occurred Sunday morning at a coffee shop in parkland, WA, near McChord Air Force Base, about 40 miles south-southwest of Seattle. The officers killed were Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39; Officer Ronald Owens, 37; Officer Tina Griswold, 40; and Officer Greg Richards, 42. A reason for the attack is yet to be determined.

Police speculate that the suspect had help from his family after being wounded on Sunday. The sister of Clemmons stated to police that he “had not been himself lately” and that he was “unpredictable and erratic.” She further said, “He had said that the Secret Service was coming to get him because he had written a letter to the president.”

Clemmons had a long history of criminal activity in Arkansas and Washington State. Most recently, according to court records, in May he was charged with child rape and assault on a police officer. He was released on a $150,000 bond just days before Sunday’s shootings.

In 2000, Mike Huckabee, who was governor of Arkansas at the time, commuted Clemmons’ 95 year prison sentence. In a statement Sunday night, Huckabee said, “Should he be found responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington state.”
