Vale, the second largest mining company in the world, provoked 3,500 members of the United Steelworkers Union in Canada to strike over three months ago.
"Although Vale is a hugely profitable mining company, it is attacking our members' pensions, bonuses and seniority," said Leo W. Gerard, USW International President . "Now Vale wants to replace the striking Steelworkers."
This morning, in an eblast to union workers, Gerard asked members to support striking USW members in Canada. "We MUST win this fight. I am urgently requesting that you go to the LabourStart website at http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=595 and send a message to Vale demanding that it return to the bargaining table and make a fair offer." - 11/9/2009
