Love your employees to retain top talent

Dr. Beverly Kaye

It seems like such a simple concept, but for many business managers the idea of loving their employees never came to mind. That was before they read Beverly Kaye's international bestseller Love 'Em Or Lose 'Em - Getting Good People To Stay.

Dr. Kaye's book, now in its fourth edition, has sold over 500,000 copies and has prompted thousands of busy managers to re-think how they foster and grow their talent pool.  Co-authored with Sharon Jordan-Evans, this book is a highly instructive blueprint on how managers can build a stronger relationship with their employees while defining career options, recognition opportunities, and ways to unleash their motivation, values and passion.

Dr. Kaye is the Founder and CEO of Career Systems International, where she manages an organization dedicated to retention, engagement and career development. Before earning her doctorate at UCLA, she did graduate work at the MIT Sloan School of Management. She earned her Master's Degree from George Washington University. She is a noted speaker and has consulted for leading corporations including Intuit, Marriot International, Lockheed Martin, ADM, Caterpillar, WellPoint, and GE. Her organization offers workshops, consulting, and e-learning for managers that improve their overall effectiveness by being engaged and focused on their employees. Her programs and processes build strong leadership skills that motivate and retain a talented workforce. One of her key suggestions is to have managers hold "Stay Interviews" instead of exit interviews.

The book is rich with case studies, recommendations, and to do lists. One of the many helpful chapters deals with careers. In this time of economic challenge, uncertainty, and fewer job opportunities, employees may find it difficult to identify career growth. This chapter asks managers to consider several important questions:

  • Do your employees know the major economic, political and social changes taking place that will effect your organization?
  • What problems are ahead?
  • How will their progression differ in the next two to five years?
  • What really counts for success in your organization?

The book will offer key advice in dealing with these current issues while helping advise employees on career options including lateral moves, job enrichment opportunities, realignments and possible relocations. According to Dr. Kaye, "moving up in the organization is not always the only way to grow. Job enrichment and lateral moves are vital to consider." Career Systems International offers managers an opportunity to gain skills and abilities to help employees create action plans. They are more able to offer critical perspectives to coach managers to improve retention rates. Most importantly, employees learn that their management cares about them and their future.  This alone will send an important message that you want them to stay and build their career in your company.

These are powerful lessons from a powerful teacher. All twenty-six strategies will bring value to the manager's role, and enlighten the company culture in which he or she works.  I enjoyed meeting Dr. Kaye, and I'll be writing a second article on one of her other books Love It Don't Leave It - 26 Ways To Get What You Want At Work in my next article.

Enjoy your reading - and loving- your employees.
