A top request of beleaguered employees is for more work-life balance through flexible scheduling like telecommuting, fewer but longer work days, etc. They claim they can be more productive if they are more in control of their time. Whether this is true might be more a function of how they actually use their time rather than the schedule itself.
That's why organizations still want to police your time. It's a way of holding you accountable without having to worry about trusting you. If you can demonstrate that you achieve more productivity and better outcomes by controlling your time, then you have a chance at getting someone to grant you a more flexible schedule.
Your company or manager may cling to the time-based culture out of fear or ignorance, or just plain old-fashioned thinking. So even the most well-prepared appeal for different hours or workdays could fall flat. Don't lose hope; the progressive companies are out there, you just have to look hard to find them.
