When I first started freelancing full time, I was thrilled to have an office all to myself without the distractions, the office politics, the bad bosses, and the annoying coworkers. But I am extremely introverted, so working alone all day doesn’t faze me. But for other people who work for themselves, or people who have jobs that allow them to telecommute, they may need more interaction with others while they work.
If this describes your disposition, you may want to try co-working, or going to a public place in the community that has workstations—and other people. NPR recently did a story about a co-working space in New York City, where you can buy a membership and spend your day working with other telecommuters and self-employed people who want more human interaction in their workday.
Of course, this is nothing new to San Franciscans: After all, we live in a city where you can’t throw a brick without hitting a Starbucks and WiFi is our God-given right. But in coffee shops, because there are patrons who are conducting business as well as pleasure, co-working may be a good alternative for those who need a quieter atmosphere to work.
