"The call" is a dreaded reality working moms face. In the midst of a busy day, the call pulls you from work-mode and thrusts you into mommy-mode. If you handle the situation improperly, your commitment to work is questioned and your work cred(ibility) is diminished. You can minimize the damage by following these steps:
- Use you network. Moms instinctually drop everything for their kids; but, your best option may be to ask someone to handle the situation so you can remain at work.
- Keep your emotions in check. "The call" is distracting and can rattle you to the point where you blurt something unprofessional like, "My kids matter more than this job." Phyllis Mindell, Ed.D, author of How to Say It For Women
notes, "We unwittingly use communication styles that sabotage our messages." Keep your cool by focusing on the situation and how to resolve it.
- Work it out. If you must leave, estimate how long you expect to be away from work, figure out how your work will be done while you're gone, and then communicate that to your boss clearly and with authority. Your forethought will be appreciated and you'll preserve your professionalism.

Love this Michele! I know these calls all too well. I always let work know that I'm happy to make up the time lost another day (even if you're salary, it's a nice way to illustrate your commitment).
Thanks for the options - we've all gotten these calls!
