How do you define service? How about taking the NYC Correction Officer exam?
By Carolyn Tann-Starr

As long as there are two people in a room, there will probably be a minimum of two opinions. I would like to start with 16 possible choices in a PDF by Kent Koth and Scott Hamilton, Salem, OR. (1993 Revised 2003):

Your personal philosophy of service may not include the examples they provide but the object of the discussion is to get you to think about defining it. Your personal definition affects your life choices. It influences the type of jobs you pursue, the specific jobs you reject and the employment opportunities you leave behind. As a NY Working Mommy, you may find that the level of service you provide depends upon the recipient of your attention and the relationships that define your interactions.

What you may do for your loved ones may not be what you are willing to do for others. The sacrifices you are willing to make for a cause you believe in may not be an option for the ones you are ambivalent about. It is not always easy knowing which road to take when you find yourself stuck in a recession looking for work. It is sometimes just as difficult if you find yourself in a rut looking for a career change to put a smile back on your face while keeping the rent and/or mortgage paid and food on the table. Competition is fierce, so you really need to define what level of service you are willing, able and capable of providing.

You are also going to have to consider a complete change in venue if your industry cannot support you. That can be a frightening thought for some of you because there is comfort in sticking to your current routine. It’s nice to be comfortable, but don’t let it lull you into a false sense of security. Sometimes, to do a good job you have to do it afraid… When you conquer your fears, you can go forth with boldness. Take New York City Correction Officers for instance… according to NYC.gov:

• Salary increasing to $73,546 after 5 1/2 years of service
• $1,476 per year holiday pay increasing to $3,051 after 5 1/2 years
• Uniform allowance of $1100 per year
• 13 paid vacation days, increasing to 27 days after 5 years
• 11 paid holidays
• Paid health insurance
• Longevity pay ranges from $3,859 to $6,859 after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of service
