Mary Murphy, founder of Hooray For Books, a pre-school and afterschool enrichment program that seems to have come up with a winning recipe combining reading and cooking, has recently made her program availabe for franchise, including in the New York area.

Recently, Murphy (a former Kindergarten teacher) spoke to New York and New Jersey area moms about her experience founding Hooray For Books as a work from home mom of 5 at the annual iRelaunch conference. It was there Murphy says that the discussions she had with attendees helped her realize that "relaunchers are a great audience for my franchise." Since then, Murphy has been reaching out to other relaunching moms, including through MyWorkButterfly.com (a website for working moms and moms thinking about returning to work).
As Murphy described to examiner.com how her program is different than other enrichment programs on the market, her enthusiasm was certainly infectious:
Cooking: Noticing that her students universally get excited about cooking, a unique activity that is not available to them in school, all of Murphy's Hooray For Books lessons incorporate cooking, something she describes as providing a great vehicle for math and other lessons of the day.
Length: 90 minutes in length, Hooray For Books lessons give kids enough time to try out a cooking recipe and play a reading-based game and also allow dropping off moms to meaningfully complete errands or other activities.
Independence: Murphy describes how her students - even the young ones - can learn independence in the confines of her class, since she bravely allows even 3 year olds to measure out flour and other ingredients in her "kitchen" leaving the mess there but taking the independence lesson with them!
Trial and error and success: Murphy has been working on and tweaking her lesson plans for 9 years. She now describes a package of lessons that can take any child from age 2 through First Grade without ever repeating a lesson. Failed lessons have been tried and discarded. Successful lessons have been tried, tweaked and perfected.
