Travel more: Keep an overnight bag packed

Whether it is a children’s sleep-over, a last-minute business trip, an opportunity for a weekend escape, or an urge to get out of town, having a small bag packed with essentials makes travel easier. This “grab-and-go” bag is a promise to travel. Giving some advanced thought to its contents can make getaways much more enjoyable.

First: size. The bag should be one that fits in the most restrictive airline carry-on bag space. Its contents are so essential that you will be carrying it with you. Wheels or straps will ease its transport. If you are a bag stuffer, a harder case may be better. Otherwise, a softer bag can be crammed into smaller spaces. In any case, make sure it has an outer pocket or zippers set up to access the “3-1-1” TSA-approved liquid bag.

If you use hotel toiletries, you will not need much more than a toothbrush and toothpaste. Be sure to grab or include any daily needs such as an inhaler, anaphylaxis kit, contact lens kit, and any other medications or materials that you use on a daily basis. A small tube of sunscreen and a lip balm with SPF take up little space and are highly useful. Having non-prescription pain relievers and stomach meds handy is also a good idea.

Packing – and wearing - “business casual” attire will allow flexibility. Include colors and items that go with all others. Outfits can be dressed up or down depending on needs. Think of layers to adapt to weather conditions. Only pack a few items in addition to socks and underwear. Extended trips can be augmented at home before, or with purchases during the trip.

Since most people carry personal electronics, be sure to pack spare batteries, chargers and earphones. If you can, keep $100 cash in the bag to pay for incidental costs and save a trip to the ATM. Finally, pack a copy of that book that you have wanted to read.

After using this bag on a few trips, you may find it becomes your usual carry-on bag on longer trips. Additional clothing and non-essential items can be packed in a rolling bag – which can be used to carry the smaller bag. Since you will not be checking the smaller bag, you can rest assured that, if checked bags are lost, you are comfortable for a few days.

Bon voyage!
