I am a self-proclaimed horrible gift-wrapper - getting the wrinkles out of the gift wrap, taping the darn thing while holding the paper down - urgh.  And bows  - they fall off anyway so why bother?

The problem with most gift-wrap is that it is hard to reuse.  Every Christmas, I cringe at the bags of wrapping and packaging alone - we probably fill up at least two garbage bags.

Here are some alternative ideas for hiding the goods:

  1. Use colored tissue paper as the actual wrapping or to cover objects inside something that can be re-used such as a glass jar, vase or gift bag
  2. Use wine bottle bags or pretty cheap mesh bags - go check out your local Dollar Store (Family Dollar, 1st Dollar) - there are a ton of great reusable bags there!
  3. Pretty boxes - they will get used over and over again
  4. Holiday-themed towels or clothes with a ribbon
  5. Hide a present within a present - a pretty bowl with kitchen utensils, a stocking with a toy inside

P.S.  When mailing gifts yourself, take time to write addresses on a label or piece of paper taped to the box - it will allow the recipient to re-use that box.
