In the 2009 Guide to Bold New Ideas for Making Work Work, the Family and Work Institute reported on the context of workplace flexibility and the recession. Some of the actions from employers include offering employees creative schedules such as reduced hours or an increased number of unpaid days off in order to avoid layoffs.
Some of the other actions employers are taking during the recession include giving employees the option to take unlimited, unpaid personal time off during the recession while ensuring benefits and the right to return to their jobs.
Providing more schedule flexibility based on changing family needs, such as a spouse losing a job is another one of the ideas being implemented. One example of more schedule flexibility provided in the 2009 report was from Salt River Materials Group in Scottsdale, Arizona. Employees can choose to reduce their workweek by 5 - 20% and or take unpaid leave without affecting their eligibility for benefits.

How about letting employees work from home on days when the work schedule permits this? That way your employees stay happier because they spend less on gasoline and have more time because it's not spent driving to and from work.
