Inexpensive ways to feel like a million and perk up your style

"Style is more than what you wear; it is about the whole person." -Stephanie Matsumoto

Charge your battery. Do you run yourself ragged to the bone? You've worked, cooked, cleaned, put the kids to bed, walked the dog, and as soon as you collapsed on the couch you glimpse at the clock and gasp. It's 10:00 already. Where did the time go? LIke the Calgon commercial, you want the feeling of escape, of mental decompression. Hats off to you; you survived another day.  But does it have to really be this way? No, unless you allow yourself to. Here's my suggestions (all found in Hawaii) to recharge your battery and perk up your style without breaking the bank or stealing a chunk of time away from your day:

1. Buy a leave-in hair conditioner to use after every shampoo.  While my first recommendation would always be to get a haircut regularly, some may be wary of cuts. Thus, at the very least, buy a bottle of leave-in hair conditioner to battle the heat and humidity of the Hawaiian sun. Tigi is a favorite product of mine that can be found at local salons or maybe drugstores. Take care of your hair. Nothing is sloppier than a shaggy head of hair that's dry and brittle. Average price: $15 and up.

2. Buy a great smelling shampoo. While what smells great is a personal preference, I always love the smells of Aveda shampoos. It's minty, clean, and fresh and that can perk anyone up! But this is one of the great pleasures to sample and try different products that suit your hair. However, the best compliment is always when someone else notices the freshness and condition of your hair. Aveda can be found at Kahala Shopping Mall, Ala Moana Shopping Center and some local salons.  Average price: $10 and up.

3. Buy a lipstick or lipgloss. Having a little bit of sheen can dress up the face and make you look more polished. While bright colors may not be popular with the surfer girls, it's still better to protect your lips with salve or lip balm like Carmex and that can give a nice sheen too. For great quality and reasonable prices, check out the Mac counter or visit Sephora for more selection of brands. Average price: $10 and up.

4. Get your eyebrows trimmed or waxed. An eyebrow trim or wax will frame your face by keeping your brows neat. Average price should fall within $12-$20.

5. Buy a fragrant body spray or body oil: While grocery shopping, why not also visit the beauty section at Whole Foods and Umeke Market where the products are made free of harmful chemicals and often are much more reasonable than department store prices. There are a variety of organic brands and the stores often have fragrant body sprays or body oils for you to sample. Spray away to your delight and you may come away with a potpourri of scents. Whole Foods and Umeke Market are located in Kahala. Average price: $10 and up.

6. Buy luxurious floral soaps. I love beautiful, handmade soaps. It feels so rustic yet so decadent. Check out a coconut soap from Island Soap Candle Works located at Waikiki and Ward Warehouse. Average price per soap:$3.

7. Indulge in a manicure/spa pedicure. It's amazing what cutting your cuticles and soaking your feet can do for your spirits! Average price:$30.

8. Buy a pair of fun and fashionable hoop earrings. When you can stow away the diamonds and the pearl studs and want to just scream "FUN," then opt for a pair of sassy, hoop earrings. You can find a variety of great, reasonable, fashionable earrings at So Good Jewelry Hawaii located in Waikiki. The store has racks and racks of not only earrings, but necklaces, bracelets, etc. Something there for everyone!  Average price: $10 and up.

9. Treat yourself to High Tea at the Moana Surfrider Hotel. Soak in the balmy air, the relaxing ambiance, and the finger sandwiches at the veranda of the Moana Surfrider sipping High Tea. You're the Queen. Average price:$25-$30.

10. Soak in the beautiful Hawaiian ocean. With the sand squeezing between your toes, the warm tropical Hawaiian waters enveloping your body, and the sun recharging your battery at breakneck speed, who needs Calgon? It's your own backyard. And it's free.

Keep that battery always charged!
