The reigning Strikeforce Women's leightweight Champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos from Brazil successfully defended her title against challenger Marloes Coenen from the Nettherlands via TKO in round three last night at Strikeforce Miami which took place at the the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.
Although the one-inch taller Coenen was not intimidated by Santos initially and went toe to toe with her in the first round, the powerful punches took their toll on Coenen eventually. As submission artist Coenen's only chance to defeat Santos would have been on the ground. But Santos was well aware of that and mostly avoided a ground game. But even when they did hit the floor Santos dominated while Coenen kept her in the guard trying to lock a triangle choke.
Once Coenen had suffered extensive damage and was clearly slowing down while relying almost solely on defensive tactics, Santos felt comfortable enough to get on the ground with her to dish out ruthless doses of ground and pound that sealed the deal at 3:40 in round three when the ref stopped the fight and awarded Santos the win via TKO.
