Last Saturday I had the pleasure of visiting a local farmer's market in Old Town, Alexandria, VA. I met a local business owner, Mellenie Runion, Founder of truly-life, eco friendly gifts.

I was drawn to Mellenie's table by her beautiful array of handmade, all natural soaps, lotion bars and perfumes. (I initially thought her beautiful soap was fudge!).  I was impressed by the natural ingredients listed in her soap, compared to the chemicals in her grocery store soap example, Dove.  I purchased a wonderful smelling, chemical-free bar of coconut shampoo/body soap and a natural perfume for my daughter.

Truly-life was founded by Mellenie in 2008 from a need to bring women safe, green, personal care products, at a time when very little was available. Mellenie was very concerned by the dangerous ingredients she read about in the personal care products she found in the stores. She felt that women needed a safer alternative for themselves and their families.

Word spread about Mellenie's all natural, chemical free products as her friends received them as party favors at her beloved Jack Russell Max's birthday party. Mellenie found herself busy making more product as well as expanding her product line to eco friendly pet items and wooden heirloom gifts made from organic and natural materials.  Mellenie is committed to bettering the environment, "We think it's about clean air and appreciating natural treasures."   All of truly-life's packaging is biodegradable and local delivery is made by bicycle.

Great article, Heidi. I buy handmade all natural soaps from a number of local producers and love all of the wonderful scents they have. They are a bit more expensive than the ones you buy from the store, but so much better for you. And they make great hostess gifts to give.
