Summer has unofficially arrived here in Philly, and it's time to think about weekends down the shore and of course, great beach reads. Here's a list of this summer's must-have books to tuck into your beach bag (look for part two next week):
The Beach House by Jane Green (Release date: June 2): Another winner from the talented author of bestsellers such as Second Chance, Swapping Lives and Jemima J. Set in Nantucket, this fabulous beach read tells the story of Nan Powell, an eccentric widow who decides to rent rooms for the summer to save Windermere, her beautiful Siasconset home. The cast of characters who come to stay at Windermere provide entertaining sub plots, each of them looking to find themselves in Nantucket and finding more than they dreamed possible.
Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner (Release date: July 14): Childhood friends Valerie and Addie had a falling out in high school, but when Valerie shows up at Addie's house the night of their reunion with blood on her coat and a crazy story, Addie is roped into a wild adventure. Despite Addie's hesitation about their past, the two reconnect and she learns that even Val's life growing up wasn't as perfect as she thought. Weiner switches between the present day and memories of the girls growing up in this charming story of how love (and friends) can come into your life in the strangest of ways.
Hollywood is Like High School with Money by Zoey Dean (Release date: July 23): The New York Times bestselling author of The A-List series entertains with the tale of a 24-year-old second assistant (yes, an assistant to an assistant) in the movie industry who learns how to fake it 'til she makes it in Hollywood...all under the tutelage of the 16-year-old daughter of her boss. Definite guilty pleasure with plenty of US Weekly-esque references to celebrity culture and designer name dropping.
Mating Rituals of the North American WASP by Lauren Lipton (now in stores): As far too many of us know, what happens in Vegas does not necessarily stay in Vegas, which Peggy Adams learns after she wakes up next to a guy she doesn't remember, who she apparently married. The story is familiar, but Lipton's funny, addictive novel takes a different twist: the couple agrees to stay married for a year in order to inherit her new husband's family mansion in Connecticut, and Peggy needs to pretend to be the perfect WASP wife.
The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (now in stores): If you haven't read the Twilight series yet, summer is the perfect time to get hooked. In case you've been living under a rock for the past year, it tells the story of Bella, a human teenager, who falls in love with Edward, a vampire. The movie version of book 2, New Moon, comes out this November. Check out the trailer here. You can also read more Twilight news from our Twilight Examiner, Amanda Bell.
