Business women: How to become powerful forces in the workplace

Conducting business today is not the same as it was even ten years ago. The world of business has changed, and those changes are plugging right into the business women's natural strengths. As we all know, companies are downsizing and need to be more flexible. They're relying more on teams that can operate across departments, resulting in the melding of groups who are not used to working together, or may not even know each other. In addition, the long-time feeling by employees that management doesn't listen to their needs or really know what's it's like in the "trenches" is still looming large. And so what does all this have to do with women in business?

According to extensive research, women have the ability to work well in groups. They are intuitive, communicative, and empathic, and they are good negotiators. This style works well in today's business world. It gives women the opportunity to do what they do best; bring people together in a harmonious way. Most business women don't take the time to stop and analyze their innate abilities. They are too busy just getting the work done, and doing a good job of it.

But, in order to stand out in the crowd, they must begin to capitalize on those innate female qualities and concentrate on developing the skills that need the most work; like branding, social media, and marketing. Researchers cite these areas as being the weakest in women who are in business. One Public relations firm in New Hampshire, which partnered with the New Hampshire Women's Business Center to offer classes in Marketing,  reported that some of the women had never learned how to write a press release. Because they were intimidated by marketing, they had never even announced the opening of their businesses, even though they had been in business for months.

For women, who are in the same situation or just starting out in business, marketing is an important component and must be addressed head on. There is plenty of information on line and most business women are more than capable of understanding it. Just remember to address the following areas: 1. Assuming you have a good business plan and a marvelous and informative website, learn how to write a press release to let the world know you are ready to serve their needs. 2. Make sure you understand what it means to "brand" your business.  3. Get involved in Social Media, as a means to connect with your target audience. Join Twitter, build a blog, get your name and your personality and style "out there". Women have a natural ability to work with people and by honing their marketing skills, they  can become powerful forces in a once dominated "man's world".
