We have heard that leaders who can communicate effectively and strategically will succeed in business. But is it true? And if it is, where could they learn to sharpen or develop their skills?

To find out, I took a rare opportunity to interview the inspiring and gracious Kristin Arnold, President National Speakers Association 2010-11. We discussed business success gained from her National Speakers Association (NSA) involvement and how it can help today’s leaders grow their companies. The valuable highlights follow.

What inspired you to join NSA? I had been facilitating professionally for about four years and wanted to branch out into speaking as a way to gain visibility and drive more business to my company.

How long have you been a part of the organization? I joined in 1997 and attended a few local chapter meetings before I took the plunge into membership.

Has your ability and status as a professional speaker helped
you in your career?
Absolutely. As a result of my
speaking engagements, I am in more demand as a professional
facilitator, trainer, author and all-around expert in the field of
team work
. Additionally, my membership at NSA has been invaluable.
The involvement with NSA has cut years off my learning curve on how to
monetize my expertise, not only as a speaker, but also as a trainer,
consultant, facilitator, coach, et al., I have also developed deep
friendships with other speakers and we refer business to and among
each other.

How much can you earn as a professional speaker? Potentially in the
seven figures. To clarify, it is an investment in time and dedication is important. For most professional speakers, the income is directly dependent on how much you get out there and speak, write, and do the voodoo that you do so well! As an example, it can encompass a
broad array of services (e.g., speech, training, facilitation, consulting, coaching, webinars et al.,) and products (e.g., books, learning systems, support products et al.,) that provide real
value to the buyer.

How can this help today's business professional? If you have a passion for a topic that
you think others need to know, NSA is a great place to not only learn how to leverage your expertise, but to spend time with other talented people who are equally as passionate. Collectively, the association may have experts speaking on many subjects other than your specific topic, but the common thread they will have is a focus to make this world a better place while providing for financial well being.
