Music Time is a brand new business in East County that teaches guitar, piano, drums, bass, vocal, violin and more to all ages. Their model is a modern approach to teaching music that takes it from the past to the present.
Developed by Dean Bruce, he had a goal to bring learning music to the 21st century. "Kids are watching High School Musical and Hannah Montana and seeing how much fun music is and want to be part of it, fast. They don't want to wait years to play the songs they hear on the radio and TV, that is why Guitar Hero is so popular, so we tailor the lesson to teach those songs to them right away," said Bruce.
Bruce is a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit, that lights up when he talks about his dream to have the most successful music studio in San Diego.
"It is so interesting to see more and more teen students coming in wanting to learn how to play electric guitar and drums to songs from the 70's and 80's. Whether they are rediscovering the music on their own or are being encouraged by their parents, we are excited to teach them," said Bruce.
The studio is welcoming with new carpeting and studio rooms with wood flooring to enrich the acoustics. What you notice first is the large kid-friendly waiting room, with a TV and Guitar Hero ready to be played, a bench with toys and for the parents comfy chairs and WiFi. The studio rooms are not your typical closet room size with a closed door. They are big. "We don't want to separate the kids from their parents. We wanted to give parents the option to sit in on the lessons or view their child taking lessons through the glass, " says Bruce.
We are very lucky to have the greatest teachers. They have educational, stage and studio backgrounds that set them a bar above the rest. Bruce says you should watch the video of the studios rock band, too. "They were individual students that we brought together. On Sundays their parents and families and friends watch them practice and play. It fun for everyone."
In closing, I asked Bruce what is one of his favorite memories in teaching.
"There is a lot of them, but recently, two of my students, one a guitar student and the other a drum student, played a Metallica song for the first time together," said Bruce. The looks on the kids and parents faces were priceless. They knew they sounded great. In a few weeks, they became so good, that the waiting room was full of family and friends that were coming to hear them play."
Music Time is not just about lessons, it is all about music and opening up a whole new world of fun to students. This is no Guitar Hero...this is the real thing.

This is so so so awesome I wished we lived nearby so that my last child could take advantage of such forward thinking instruction. Dean is totally right KIDS don't want to wait forever to play the hit songs... My kid has learned off "you tube" how to play T'wilight's unofficial theme song. Good review!
